Abstract

Abstract

Satellite-Based Vegetation Monitoring in Charkhi Dadri District: Trends of Deforestation and Afforestation from 1995 to 2024
Abstract
Using high-resolution satellite imagery from USGS Landsat 5 and Landsat 9, this study looks at the vegetation dynamics of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, India, from 1995 to 2024, with an emphasis on afforestation and deforestation patterns. By using spectral analysis and indexes like the NDVI, these datasets were crucial in identifying changes in the vegetative cover. According to the report, urbanization, mining, and agricultural growth were the main causes of the deforestation that resulted in the loss of 545.08 sq. km of vegetation. This is the study's unfavourable conclusion. Afforestation operations, on the other hand, resulted in the recovery of 160.85 sq. km, indicating that reforestation efforts were successful in some places. 323.55 square kilometres have unaltered vegetation, whereas 351.88 square kilometres are completely devoid of vegetation.
The district's southern and southwestern areas, where deforestation is most prevalent, show a net loss of vegetation, according to these data. In spite of that, reforestation initiatives in the central and northeastern regions demonstrate beneficial ecological interventions. Vegetation patterns in Charkhi Dadri are greatly influenced by the semi-arid environment, little groundwater, unequal rainfall distribution, and human activity.
In order to address the high pace of deforestation, this study highlights the necessity of more robust conservation laws, sustainable land use practices, and improved afforestation initiatives. It emphasizes how crucial it is to strike a balance between environmental sustainability and development in order to preserve the district's ecological integrity and keep its primarily agrarian economy.

Abstract

From Global Capitalism to Local Humanism: Deendayal Upadhyaya’s Alternative to Western Models of Growth
Abstract
This paper explores Deendayal Upadhyaya’s philosophy of Integral Humanism as a sociological alternative to Western models of development, particularly global capitalism and socialism. It examines how his vision of Local Humanism integrates material, moral, cultural, and ecological dimensions of human life, emphasizing holistic well-being, social harmony, ethical economy, and cultural rootedness. Through content analysis of Upadhyaya’s writings and relevant sociological literature, the study identifies key themes such as the upliftment of marginalized populations (Antyodaya), self-reliance (Swadeshi), and ecological sustainability. The paper argues that Upadhyaya’s ideas offer a human-centered, ethically grounded framework for envisioning Viksit Bharat 2047, challenging reductionist development models that prioritize profit or industrial growth over human dignity. By re-embedding development within cultural, ethical, and community structures, Integral Humanism provides a constructive blueprint for sustainable, inclusive, and socially cohesive growth, offering insights relevant for both India and the global development discourse.

Algorithmic Management and the New Digital Panopticon: A Study of Food Delivery Workers in Urban India
Abstract
This study investigates how algorithmic management creates a “digital panopticon” for food delivery workers engaged with Swiggy and Zomato in Varanasi. Drawing on a sample of 50 delivery partners selected through purposive sampling; the research employs a mixed-method design combining structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that algorithmic controls, such as real-time GPS tracking, automated order allocation, customer-rating systems, and incentive-linked surveillance, shape workers’ labour processes, autonomy, and everyday decision-making. Most participants reported constant pressure to maintain performance metrics, fear of penalties, and limited ability to negotiate work conditions. The study also uncovers psychological strains associated with continuous monitoring and the normalization of self-discipline, as workers adjust their behaviour to meet algorithmic expectations. While algorithmic systems enhance efficiency and speed, they simultaneously produce precarity, heightened work intensity, and a sense of invisible control. The research concludes that platform work in Varanasi exemplifies a new regime of digital labour discipline, where surveillance and data-driven managerial techniques restructure worker–platform relations.

“Negotiating Tribal Identity in Formal Schooling Systems” : The Sociology of Non-Formal Education.
Abstract
This paper investigates the sociological significance of non-formal education in conserving tribal identity and shaping aspirations among India’s indigenous communities. Drawing upon qualitative and ethnographic insights, it argues that non-formal educational spaces—rooted in community practices, skill-based learning, and indigenous knowledge systems—serve as transformative platforms that simultaneously strengthen cultural identity and enhance pathways for social and economic mobility. While formal schooling often alienates tribal learners through linguistic barriers and culturally distant pedagogy, non-formal education offers culturally resonant learning opportunities that support community empowerment. This study demonstrates how non-formal educational initiatives challenge dominant narratives of tribal marginality by fostering agency, leadership, and alternative developmental imaginaries. The paper concludes that non-formal education enables tribal communities to negotiate modernity on their own terms, blending tradition with contemporary aspirations.

Small-Scale Industries and Future Prospects in Assam
Abstract
Assam, a state known for its rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources, has been making steady strides in industrial development in recent decades. Among the various sectors contributing to the state’s economic framework, small-scale industries (SSIs) have emerged as a crucial segment. These industries not only provide employment opportunities and stimulate local economies but also help preserve traditional crafts and innovate in new fields. This comprehensive article examines the development, economic impact, government policies, success stories, and future prospects of small-scale industries in Assam, drawing on the available literature and documented sources. Assam’s small-scale industries (SSIs) play a vital role in fostering inclusive economic growth by integrating rural and urban economies. These industries encompass a diverse range of activities, including traditional handloom weaving, handicrafts, food processing, and agro-based products that capitalise on the state’s abundant natural resources and skilled artisan communities. By promoting entrepreneurship and skill development at the grassroots level, SSIs significantly contribute to reducing regional disparities and unemployment. Moreover, they serve as a platform for preserving Assam’s unique cultural identity through the continuation and modernisation of indigenous crafts, thereby attracting both domestic and international markets. The Assam government has implemented various supportive policies and schemes aimed at strengthening the SSI sector, such as financial incentives, infrastructure development, and marketing assistance. These initiatives have helped many small enterprises overcome challenges related to capital access, technology adoption and market reach. Success stories from the region highlight how SSIs have adapted to changing economic conditions by embracing innovation and diversifying their product lines, enhancing their competitiveness. Looking ahead, the future prospects for Assam’s small-scale industries are promising, provided there is sustained policy support, increased investment in skill enhancement, and improved linkages with larger value chains to scale up production and market penetration in the future.
