| Abstract | The historical division between physics and psychology has obscured fundamental continuities between physical principles and mental phenomena, creating disciplinary boundaries that contemporary theoretical and empirical developments render increasingly untenable. This paper presents a synthesis of theoretical and empirical work spanning psychophysics, quantum cognition, coordination dynamics, and neurobiological models of consciousness, drawing on fifty-four distinct sources from classical psychophysics to contemporary quantum approaches and dynamical systems theory. We argue that psychological processes, from perception and decision-making to consciousness itself, are deeply intertwined with physical principles that extend beyond classical mechanistic frameworks, and that physical principles provide not merely metaphorical resources for psychological description but constitute an essential explanatory framework for understanding cognition, consciousness, and behavior. The integration of physical and psychological perspectives reveals that the traditional division between these domains obscures fundamental continuities in the structure of experience and the dynamics of living systems. This synthesis has profound implications for both fields, suggesting that a unified framework incorporating insights from quantum mechanics, coordination dynamics, and information theory can illuminate the nature of consciousness, decision-making, and the embodied mind. We conclude by identifying promising directions for future research, including empirical investigation of quantum probability in human cognition, mechanisms by which intentional processes shape physical dynamics, and continued theoretical development toward a fully unified framework. |
