Abstract This study examines the evolution of feminist consciousness and debates on women’s education in colonial India through a critical study of Tarabai Shinde’s reformist thought. Tarabai Shinde, best known for her pioneering text Stri Purush Tulana (A Comparison Between Women and Men, 1882), emerges as one of the earliest voices to challenge entrenched patriarchy, caste oppression, and gender-based inequalities. Situating her work within the broader socio-political context of 19th-century Maharashtra and the reformist movements led by Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, this study analyses how Shinde’s critique of Brahmanical patriarchy intersects with contemporary discourses on female education. The study argues that Shinde’s radical interrogation of social norms not only questioned women's restricted access to literacy but also exposed the moral double standards that shaped women’s everyday lives. Through close textual analysis and historical contextualization, the research highlights Shinde’s unique contribution to early Indian feminist thought, demonstrating how her ideas anticipated later feminist debates on agency, autonomy, and structural injustice. Ultimately, the study positions Tarabai Shinde as a crucial but often overlooked figure whose advocacy for intellectual and social emancipation played a foundational role in shaping feminist and educational reform in colonial India.
