| Abstract | The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a comprehensive framework to make the Indian education system more inclusive, flexible, multidisciplinary, skill-based and technology-enabled. The policy gives special emphasis on structural reforms in schools and higher education, foundational learning, changes in curriculum and pedagogy, teacher education development, vocational education, multidisciplinary learning, digital education, research and innovation and equity and inclusion. At the same time, the existing infrastructural, financial, human resource, teacher preparation, digital capacity and administrative challenges in the institutional readiness of educational institutions and effective implementation have been analysed. The analysis indicates that there is not a uniform alignment between the policy objectives of NEP 2020 and the implementation capacity. The implementation capacity may also vary due to differences in adequate infrastructure, skilled human resources, opportunities for teacher and faculty development, technological facilities, financial resources and effective administrative systems across educational institutions. The study also shows that policy gaps and institutional readiness are closely related; lack of adequate institutional capacity, resources and administrative support can hinder the translation of policy objectives into tangible educational outcomes. The study adopts a mixed-methods framework within a descriptive and analytical research design. Primary information was obtained from teachers, faculty, administrative officers and other relevant stakeholders of selected educational institutions through questionnaires, interviews and institutional assessment; besides, NEP 2020, government documents, policy reports, education-related statistics, research papers, books and other reliable relevant secondary materials were also examined. The discussion suggests that the effective implementation of NEP 2020 does not depend only on policy adoption; rather, it significantly depends on the integrated capabilities of institutional capacity, infrastructure, financial support, teacher preparedness, digital readiness, administrative effectiveness, stakeholder participation and inter-institutional coordination. Taken together, NEP 2020 offers scope for a long-term transformation in India’s education system; however, to translate that potential into real and meaningful educational outcomes, greater attention is required for policy formulation as well as institution-level preparedness and implementation capacity. The analysis recommends that consistent emphasis should be placed on adequate funding, infrastructure development, continuous teacher and faculty development, digital inclusion, effective monitoring and evaluation, stakeholder participation and inter-institutional coordination. These integrated measures can help achieve more effective and sustainable outcomes in terms of quality of education, equity, inclusion, skills, research, innovation and overall development of students by reducing the gap between the policy objectives of NEP 2020 and actual institutional practices. |
