| Abstract | Lesson planning is one of the most enduring instruments of professional teaching practice, yet the assumptions underlying it have shifted repeatedly over the past two centuries. This paper offers a historical and critical review of how lesson planning has evolved from the formal, teacher-centred procedures associated with Johann Friedrich Herbart to the learner-centred, competency-based, inclusive, and increasingly technology-mediated practices of the present day. Using a narrative and thematic review methodology, the study draws on seminal educational works, curriculum-policy documents, and contemporary literature on digital and artificial-intelligence-assisted instruction to trace seven overlapping historical stages: Herbartian formalism, Deweyan progressivism, behavioural and objective-based planning, constructivism, competency- and outcome-based design, inclusive and differentiated planning, and digital and AI-assisted planning. The review finds that each stage did not simply replace its predecessor but layered new priorities — measurable outcomes, learner agency, inclusion, and now algorithmic assistance — onto a persistent core concern: how to translate broad educational aims into a coherent, teachable sequence of classroom experience. Contemporary implications are considered for teacher education, curriculum design, and policy, particularly in light of frameworks such as India’s National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework 2023, and the growing availability of generative artificial intelligence tools for instructional design. The review concludes that lesson planning remains fundamentally a professional and reflective act of judgement rather than a purely technical or automatable procedure, and that future practice will depend on teachers’ capacity to critically evaluate, adapt, and take ownership of increasingly technology-assisted planning tools rather than defer to them.
