Abstract

Global Value Chains (GVCs) have become a salient feature of the modern global economy, framing international trade, production, and economic development. Countries are increasingly participating in production networks that are fragmented, where different stages of manufacturing and services are carried out in different countries. As one of the rapidly growing emerging economies, India has gradually become a part of these global production networks. Participation in GVCs offers opportunities for economic growth, technological upgrading, employment generation, and export expansion. However, India’s position within global value chains remains relatively modest compared to many East Asian economies. This research paper examines the role of GVCs in India’s economic development by analysing trends in participation, identifying major challenges, and exploring future prospects. The study highlights sectoral contributions such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and electronics while addressing structural barriers including infrastructure gaps, regulatory issues, and limited manufacturing competitiveness. The paper concludes that strengthening India’s integration into global value chains requires strategic policy reforms, investment in infrastructure, technological innovation, and deeper participation in global trade networks. The study is based on secondary data collected from government reports, international organizations, and academic literature. The findings suggest that strengthening infrastructure, improving the ease of doing business, investing in skill development, and promoting innovation and technological advancement are essential for enhancing India’s participation in global value chains. Greater integration into global value chains can significantly contribute to India’s economic growth, industrial development, and global competitiveness in the coming decades.
