Redefining Tribal Knowledge Traditions: Birsa Munda’s Anti-Colonial Vision in Contemporary India.

Birsa Munda’s anti-colonial vision highlights indigenous resistance to colonial loot, which is a significant but relatively unexplored dimension of India’s freedom struggle. This research paper, ‘Reclaiming Vanvasi Epistemology: Birsa Munda’s Anti-Colonial Vision in Contemporary India,’ is an analysis of how the leadership and vision of Birsa Munda offers a critical agenda for decolonizing Vanvasi epistemologies and addressing the structural injustices on tribal populations in present-day India. It examines Birsa’s resistance against economic exploitation, cultural annihilation, and land dispossession under British rule, making his movement a core of social justice and tribal self-determination. Based on primary sources such as colonial reports, missionary accounts, and oral traditions, this work reconstructs Birsa’s ideological position and identifies its relevance in solving contemporary problems such as resource injustice, ecological destruction, and the marginalization of indigenous knowledge systems. This paper also examines how Birsa’s vision has continued to exist in postcolonial tribal politics and movements, including land rights and theories of sustainable development. It outlines the importance of integrating indigenous perspectives into India’s cultural and socio-political discourse by providing Vanvasi epistemology, thus fostering an inclusive and egalitarian national identity.
