The Green Convergence: Interdisciplinary Synthesis of Environmental Sustainability in Odia Literature and the Principles of Green Chemistry

This comprehensive research article establishes a pioneering interdisciplinary dialogue between the qualitative, ethical frameworks of the humanities—specifically environmental sustainability as depicted in Odia literature—and the quantitative, operational systems of the hard sciences, represented by Green Chemistry. Historically, literature and chemical engineering have been treated as distinct fields. However, the escalating global ecological crisis necessitates a unified approach where cultural philosophy inspires ethical responsibility, and technical innovation delivers practical solutions. This paper evaluates how Odia literature, spanning from medieval Bhakti and Mahima spiritual poetry to modern post-colonial novels by Gopinath Mohanty, Pratibha Ray, and modern eco-poetry, champions an ecocentric worldview that rejects the exploitation of nature. Concurrently, it examines how Green Chemistry provides a practical framework to mitigate industrial pollution, reduce toxic waste, and optimize resource efficiency through its twelve fundamental principles. By establishing a conceptual bridge between the eco-ethics of regional Indian literature and the pragmatic goals of sustainable chemical design, this study outlines a comprehensive paradigm for environmental stewardship where humanistic values and molecular sciences work together toward an ecologically balanced future.
