Psychoanalytical Perspective and Psychological Expressions of Characters in Mamoni Raisom Goswami’s Novel.

This paper examines the psychological depth in the novels of Dr. Mamoni Raisom Goswami (Indira Goswami) through the lens of Freudian psychoanalysis. Positioned as a pioneer of 'Psychological Realism' in 20th-century Assamese literature, Goswami’s works transcend social documentation to explore the intricate inner world of her characters — focusing on internal conflict, repressed desires, despair, and the clash between the conscious and unconscious mind. Objectives: The study aims to: 1) Identify Freudian elements of Id, Ego, and Super-Ego in Goswami’s novels; 2) Analyze repressed female desires within traditional patriarchal and Sattriya social systems and their psychological impact; and 3) Demonstrate how characters’ mental agony culminates in rebellion or self-destruction. Analysis: Using _Datal Hatir Uye Khowa Howda_ and _Neelkanthi Braja_ as key texts, the paper analyzes the tragic psychological complexity of characters like Durga and Saudamini. Durga’s life exemplifies the violent conflict between her natural 'Id' — youthful desire and attraction to Giridhari — and the oppressive 'Super-Ego' of Sattriya widow codes, leading to guilt complex, hysteria, and escapism through opium. Similarly, Saudamini’s sexual dissatisfaction and religious guilt reveal a fractured conscious-subconscious balance. The study also addresses how economic deprivation in _Chinnamastar Manuhuto_ and _Mamore Dhara Tarowal_ breeds unconscious resentment and existential crisis, and how 'Sublimation' allows characters like Shashi to channel pain into devotion or humanitarian service. *Conclusion:* Mamoni Raisom Goswami emerges as a 'pocket doctor' of the human mind, vividly portraying the silent cry and rebellion of women shackled by religious fanaticism and patriarchy. Her flawless depiction of the grey, turbulent inner psyche through Freudian frameworks gives her novels a timeless, universal dimension beyond their social context
