| Abstract | This paper aims to study the socio-economic effects of dam-developed induced displacement in New Builum village, Mizoram. Construction of large dams has had huge economic and environmental cost. In India, large dams have displaced millions of people from their homes destroying livelihoods in the process. The question which must be asked therefore is whether the benefits of dam construction outweigh its socio-economic costs. The study found that the construction of Serlui B Hydel Power Project has led to socio-economic problems namely loss of livelihood leading to rising unemployment and deteriorating standard of living along with loss of history and memories for the displaced population now settled in New Builum village. |
