Abstract

Abstract: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) represent a critical public health challenge in India, where a vast child population faces multifaceted traumas that disrupt developmental trajectories. This article examines the prevalence, mechanisms, and long-term consequences of ACEs within India's socio-cultural context, drawing on empirical data from national surveys and localised studies. Beginning with an empathic framing from the child's viewpoint, it defines ACEs, elucidates their neurobiological and psychosocial impacts on development, and highlights enduring effects on mental health, physical well-being, and socioeconomic outcomes. Unique challenges, including cultural sigma, policy gaps, and resource constraints, are analysed alongside evidence-based strategies for prevention, intervention, and policy reform. Synthesising insights from sources such as the National Family Health Survey (NFHS5) and UNICEF reports, the discussion underscores the need for culturally adapted approaches to mitigate this silent epidemic. By addressing ACEs proactively, India can foster resilient child development and advance national goals for equity and prosperity. This analysis contributes to the growing discourse on childhood trauma in low- and middle-income countries, advocating for integrated public health responses.
