Abstract |
Effective disaster communication is essential in ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination to diverse populations, especially in linguistically rich regions like India. This paper explores the challenges and strategies for overcoming language barriers in disaster communication, emphasizing the importance of linguistic inclusivity. It discusses community engagement, government support, and policy frameworks that prioritize multilingual communication to ensure equitable access to disaster-related information. The paper further explores the role of media outlets in fostering community-driven translation efforts and developing culturally relevant messaging. Also, it examines the importance of capacity-building initiatives for media professionals, enabling them to effectively communicate across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Research and technological innovations, such as machine translation and real-time interpretation tools, are highlighted as key enablers of inclusive disaster communication. Despite significant progress, challenges such as linguistic diversity, technological gaps, and misinformation persist, requiring continued efforts for improvement. The paper concludes by proposing recommendations for the development of multilingual communication guidelines, investment in language technologies, and media literacy initiatives to enhance disaster preparedness and response. By embracing linguistic diversity and ensuring inclusive communication, media outlets can contribute to building resilient communities, ultimately improving disaster response and fostering social cohesion across India’s diverse linguistic landscape. |
